Round 14 – preview

Round 14 will surely be a thrilling one. This week, no team can sleep calmly. Two face-offs look especially interesting. MMTS Kwidzyn will go up against Orlen Wisła Płock, while Azoty Puławy will take on PGE VIVE Kielce. Both games will be broadcast on Canal + Sport.

Chrobry Głogów – Piotrkowianin Piotrków Trybunalski

For starters, Chrobry will play against Piotrkowianin. In the last round, the Głogów team has suffered a crushing defeat. They lost heavily to Stal Mielec, 29:17, despite great performance by their goalkeeper, Rafał Stachers, who saved 44% of all shots.
Piotrkowianin will come to Głogów in much better spirits. In round 13, they defeated Spójnia Gdynia 39:32. Piotr Swat played especially well, scoring 8 goals.
Piotrkowianin has not won against Chrobry since November 16, 2013. It seems that this time, Piotrkowianin, led by Dima Zimchuk, will finally be able to break that losing streak. Two of the most interesting players, Stanisław Makowiejew, backcourt, and Mateusz Górlaski, wingman, have already scored, respectively, 50 and 48 goals this season. At this point, Chrobry’s strongest weapon is Kamil Sadowski and Rafał Stachera, their goalkeeper.

MMTS Kwidzyn – Orlen Wisła Płock

In their last game, MMTS Kwidzyn has won after a fierce game against KPR Legionowo (27:24). They now have 32 points and rank third in the Blue Group. Paweł Grenda is in great shape, having scored 19 goals in total in the last two games.
Orlen Wisła Płock has brought home four points after a game against Wybrzeże Gdańsk. They are the leaders of the Orange Group but they have to watch their back – Azoty-Puławy are only three points away.
This will be one of the most thrilling matches of this round. Although it’s been quite a while since MMTS won with Wisła but both teams aspire to win the Polish Championship. Wisła will have a much stronger bench which may decide about the outcome of the game.

Spójnia Gdynia – Meble Wójcik Elbląg
When you look at the number of goals scored by Spójnia Gdynia, it is quite surprising to see that they rank last in the table. With 347 goals they now rank 9th in the Superleague. Robert Kamyszek, their top scorer, ranks third in the classification. In their last match, the Gdańsk team lost to Piotrkowianin (39:32).
Meble Wójcik Elbląg have recently been defeated by NMC Górnik Zabrze. Unfortunately, many of the team’s players are currently recovering from injuries. This season, they have won twice, against KPR Legionowo and Sandra Spa Pogoń Szczecin.
Spójnia Gdynia will take on Meble Wójcik Elbląf for four points. Both teams are in dire need of points.

NMC Górnik Zabrze – Wybrzeże Gdańsk

NMC Górnik Zabrze has been in incredibly good shape this season. So far, they have won 12 games, scoring 42 points in total. In their last game, they have won against Meble Wójcik Elbląg 17:28. It was the team’s defence that performed particularly well. Both of the Górnik’s goalkeepers, Mateusz Kornecki and Martin Galia, saved over 50% of shots.
Wybrzeże Gdańsk lost 26:31 against Orlen Wisła Płock but they didn’t make it easy. Piotr Papaj scored 8 goals and is becoming the leader of the Gdańsk team. The goalkeepers duo, Maciej Pieńczewski and Artur Chmieliński, have also performed well.

Energa MKS Kalisz – KPR Legionowo

In round 13, MKS has lost to Azoty Puławy. However, the league’s newcomer played a decent game. In the second half, Edin Tatar, the goalkeeper, helped his teammates catch up with the opponent, saving shot after shot for ten minutes straight.
KPR has also lost their last game against MMTS Kwidzyn. But it wasn’t all black and white. Legionowo has nearly caused a sensation when, for a moment, they took a lead against MMTS. It was another chance for Kacper Adamski to shine. With 86 goals, he is now the League’s top scorer.
The Saturday game will be no doubt an interesting one. This season, MKS has already won four times against three wins for KPR. The Kalisz team seems to be the game’s favourite, especially considering the fact that, playing at home, they will have the support of their many fans.

Sandra Spa Pogoń Szczecin – Stal Mielec

The last game was the third in a row in which Pogoń scored points. Although they didn’t win with Zagłębie, the game ended with penalty shots and so Pogoń scored one point. The Szczecin team now has 11 points and needs to take it up a notch if they want to advance to the 2018 Finals.
Their Saturday opponent, Stal Mielec, has some good reasons to smile. On Wednesday, their defence has played an almost perfect match, losing only 17 goals. Stal’s goalkeeper and coach, Krzysztof Lipka, played with 50% effectiveness. The 40-year-old goaldkeeper is the true leader of his team. In addition, Wiktor Kawka and Rudolf Cuzic scored 8 and 7 goals, respectively.
If Stal wins this weekend, they will advance by as much as two ranks in the Orange Group. However, if Pogoń beats Stal, it will also cause quite a stir in the group. The last two games between the two teams were won by Pogoń but this time it is Stal who is the favourite.

Azoty-Puławy – PGE VIVE Kielce

This will be the biggest sensation of round 14 of PGNiG Superleague. Azoty-Puławy will face PGE VIVE Kielce. The Azoty team has recently won against Energa MKS Kalisz 27:22. They have already rounded up 39 points. Vadim Bogdanov, the goalkeeper, saved 43% of shots in the last game. Marko Panić, backcourt, has settled in quite fast in Puławy and is now the team’s top scorer.
PGE VIVE Kielce will probably come to Puławy with a full lineup. The Kielce team have scored over 40 goals in each of their three last Superleague games. They have recently defeated Gwardia Opole 21:43, with Manuel Strlek scoring 7 goals out of 7 shots. Talant Duyshebaev, VIVE coach, has two full lineups at his disposal, that he keeps rotating during the matches.
Although extremely ambitious, Azoty have never won against Kielce. Last season, they were really close, with VIVE winning in overtime. The clash between the Polish Champions and the third Superleague team will surely provide great thrills for handball fans all over Poland, both those watching it live in Puławy and at home on Canal + Sport.
