round 15 – preview

This will be the last round of PGNiG Superleague in 2017. The biggest sensation of round 15, the face-off between Orlen Wisła Płock and NMC Górnik Zabrze, will be broadcasted live at nSport + and Canal + Sport 2. After the game, some of the players will participate in the training camp of the Polish national team, while others will finally have a chance to catch breath and regain strength. We’ll be back on January 17.

The Tricity Derby

This will be the first Tricity Derby since the relaunch of PGNiG Superleague. Wybrzeże Gdańsk, the host, have lost their last game to NMC Gornik (33:25). Nevertheless, one must admit the Gdańsk team played decent handball, giving Górnik a real scare. The right wingman Wojciech Prymlewicz performed especially well, scoring ten goals in total. As of now, Wybrzeże have 14 points and ranks sixth in the table.
Spójnia Gdynia have recently won their second match this season, defeating Meble Wojcik Elbląg 32 to 28 and scoring 21 goals in the first half alone. With seven points, they now rank eighth in the Blue Group.

A match for third place

The game between Stal and Gwardia will surely provide some thrills to handball fans. Stal have recently won in the penalty shootout against Sandra Spa Pogoń Szczecin, catching up with Gwardia Opole in the Orange Group.
The game between Gwardia and Zagłębie from round 14 has been rescheduled and will be played on February 7. Round 13, on the other hand, has seen the Opole team losing heavily against PGE VIVE Kielce. Gwardia faced difficulties with their lineup which had adverse effect on their play. Lack of basic backcourts and the main goalkeeper significantly affected their performance.
The two teams will fight for third place in the Orange Group. Both have strong and experienced goalkeepers: Krzysztof Lipka in Stal Mielec and Adam Malcher in Gwardia Opole. The teams’ young backcourts follow their example. Wiktor Kawka (21 y/o) has already scored 72 goals for Stal, while Gwardia’s top scorer is the 19-year-old Patryk Mauer.

Zagłębie Lubin v. Puławy

Just like Gwardia, Zagłębie did not play in round 14. Consequently, their players have had more time to recuperate after their last game against NMC Górnik Zabrze.  With 10 points in total, the team now ranks fifth in the Blue Group.
In the hit game of round 14, Azoty-Puławy lost to PGE VIVE Kielce 25:30. Paweł Podsiadło, Witalij Titow and Marko Panić, the Azoty backcourts, played particularly well. Unfortunately, the team faces significant difficulties in their lineup due to the injuries of their central backcourts, Krzysztof Łyżwa and Bartosz Kowalczyk and will have to look for alternative solutions in that part of the field.
Although it is the visiting team that is considered the game’s favourites, we are all well-aware that the ambitious Lubin team is famous for their head-to-head fights against theoretically stronger opponents. What is more, Zagłębie doesn’t seem to have problems scoring goals. With average result per game at 29.4 goals, we can be sure they will put up a fight.

Hit game in round 15

In their last game, Wisła have easily defeated MMTS Kwidzyn, dominating on the field in almost every aspect of the game. The team’s wingman, Michał Daszek, played with 100% accuracy. Gilberto Duarte and Przemysław Krajewski also have a reason to smile, having scored seven goals each. The team strengthened their position as the leader of the Orange Group.
However, their Wednesday opponent, NMC Górnik Zabrze, has the same number of points. In the last round, although with some difficulties, they have defeated Wybrzeże Gdańsk.  Losing 13:16 at the break, the team took their play up a notch and win the meeting 33:25. Michał Adamuszek, Górnik’s backcourt, scored 10 goals, including one free throw.
Both teams now have seven wins to their name. Wisła’s firepower is a bit stronger – on average, they score 31.9 goals per game against 30.4 goals for Górnik. They also have a much stronger defence, losing 22.9 goals on average. Górnik’s average result in this regard equals 25.5 goals. On paper, Wisła seem to be the game’s favourite but we have to remember that Górnik, after not-so-great last season, will no doubt want to prove their worth. If they want to show that they can compete against the very best, this would be a good time. One thing is certain – we will witness some handballs thrills this week.

MMTS v. Energa MKS Kalisz

Energa MKS Kalisz have recently broken their losing streak, defeating KPR Legionowo 27:25. Edin Tatar, Energa’s goalkeeper, proved his worth and made some important saves. With 17 points, the team now ranks seventh in the Orange Group, falling short of Wybrzeże Gdańsk by just one point.
MMTS, on the other hand, was severely defeated by Orlen Wisła Płock. The Kwidzyn team is now facing an unfortunate series of injuries, with their centre and right backcourts suffering the most. However, with some acclaimed players in their lineup, they will surely be the favourite in the game against the league’s newcomer, unless they ignore the potential of the support of the host’s many fans.

Breaking Pogoń

This will likely be a thrilling game. So far, Piotrkowianin have scored 19 points and now ranks fifth in the Orange Group. They have recently lost by an inch to Chrobry Głogów, 30:28.
Sandra Spa Pogoń Szczecin are slowly picking themselves up. They won points in their last four games. But that may not be enough. In their last two games, they scored only one point. Both meetings ended with a penalty shootout and the Szczecin team had to give in to their opponents.
This Wednesday, two teams from the Orange group will fight for four points. Piotrkowianin will have the advantage of playing at home. Their arena, although small, is always filled with their fans, creating incredible atmosphere. However, the last time Piotrkowianin won with Pogon was in 2003, so with this game they will have to break this sad losing streak.

Another thriller?

In their last meeting this year, Meble will play against Chrobry Głogów. Last round, they lost to Spójnia Gdynia 32:28. What is worse, the team is struggling with a plague of injuries. Fighting against the odds, Jakub Moryń scored ten goals and Bartosz Janiszewski seven.
Chrobry, after being defeated by Stal Mielec, has recently won against Piotrkowianin and strengthened their position in the group. One thing is sure: that team knows how to keep their fans on the edge of their seats. As long as they don’t lose focus at the beginning of the game, the match against Meble Wójcik Elbląg will be a close-fought one.

VIVE v. KPR

In the last round, the Polish Champions have defeated Azoty-Puławy 25:30. Talant Duyshebaev, VIVE coach, was satisfied with his players. Michał Jurecki is getting increasingly better. Last week, he scored one of the most interesting goals of the season, from the nine-meter line, standing with his back to the goal.
KPR Legionowo have lost by an inch to Energa MKS Kalisz 27:25 and currently rank sixth in the Blue Group.
