On February 27, 2016 the Superliga Sp. z o.o. company was created and entrusted with operating a professional men’s handball league. Significant changes were introduced in the competition format and communication strategy, and the Company secured two major sponsorships: with PGNiG and Suzuki.
PGNiG Superleague has introduced a number of changes to improve the standards and quality of the tournament. The company has developed a new visual communication strategy, consistent with the latest marketing strategy. Handball arenas are being refurbished, and future plans include a youth training programme to develop new assets for the league.
The title sponsor of the league is the Polish gas and petroleum company, Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo (PGNiG). Now, Suzuki Motor Poland Sp. z o.o. was signed as the partner and official vehicle provider for the Superleague. “A partner like Suzuki provides tangible support to the clubs,” says Łukasz Gontarek, president of PGNiG Superleague. “We received 15 Suzuki SX4 S-CROSS cars, extremely comfortable and versatile crossovers that will surely help us with a range of tasks.”
Important changes have also been made to the competition format. 14 teams from all over Poland are now divided into two groups: Orange and Blue. Draws and overtimes have been eliminated.
For quite some time now handball has been growing in popularity in Poland, and Polish clubs are increasingly successful in international tournaments. “Our objective is not just to operate a professional league tournament, but also to take the clubs to a new level – and they have already made enormous efforts and introduced many changes, both in their organization and in their game,” adds Łukasz Gontarek.
In a single season, the 14 clubs based in cities with a total of over 2 million residents will play 198 games. To cap the season, the first ever Superleague Gala will be held on May 29, 2017.
